Application Requirements

All finalists for admission to the System Design & Management (SDM) program are required to attend an on-campus or phone/video interview prior to receiving a final decision. These applicants will be contacted directly by the SDM Admissions Office.

All applicants to MIT SDM must submit the following:

Online application

To start a new application to the SDM Master’s Program in Engineering and Management please visit sdm.mit.edu/apply.

Register as an applicant and complete the online application. The online application will additionally require you to submit a resume, leadership essay, and a statement of objectives. You should have these ready at the time of completing the application.

Application fee

The fee for applying to SDM is $75, payable by credit card online when you apply. You will be prompted for payment information after submitting your application.

Letters of recommendation

Three letters of recommendation must be supplied with you application. Recommendations should be completed by individuals who can comment with some certainty about an applicant’s intellectual and professional achievements and leadership potential. If possible, one recommendation should be completed by an academic source for applicants who attended a university within the last five years.

GMAT/ GRE scores

Applicants must submit current GRE or GMAT scores. Test scores should be sent to the SDM program office. The SDM program code for GMAT is X5X-QS-04; for GRE the code is 3537. The average GRE and GMAT scores for the 2016 cohort were:

Please note that GRE or GMAT scores must be less than 5 years old.

GMAT/GRE scores are mandatory and cannot be waived unless the applicant already has a  Ph.D. in a scientific, technical, or quantitative discipline.

Transcripts

Applicants must submit a copy of their transcripts of their performance at the undergraduate and graduate institutions from which they received their degree(s) or performed graduate work as part of the online application . Transcripts must be in English. Transcripts from international (non-US) institutions must be in English and certified.

SDM requirements for international applicants

International citizens are advised to apply by January 11, 2019, to allow adequate time for visa processing, if admitted.

Non-native English speakers who have not obtained a post-secondary degree at an English language institution are required to demonstrate proficiency in English. SDM requires all such applicants to take of the the following exams.

The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) exam measures ability to communicate in English across all four language skills — listening, reading, writing, and speaking — for people who intend to study or work where English is the language of communication. Only scores that are less than 2 years old will be accepted. We expect an IELTS score of 7.5 or better. To register for a test, visit www.ielts.org.

The TOEFL exam measures ability of non-native English speakers to use and understand the English language. Only scores that are less than 2 years old will be accepted. We expect a TOEFL score of 90 or better. To register for a test, visit www.ets.org/toefl.

Please note that the language competency exam is not required if your secondary/ post-secondary education was in an English language institution.

Reapplying to SDM

Those reapplying to the program need to submit the following:

  • New SDM online application
  • $75 application fee
  • Updated statement of objectives
  • Updated resume
  • 1 new letter of recommendation
  • GRE or GMAT scores
