Distance and Commuter Options for MIT’s Master’s Program in Engineering and Management

SDM offers distance and commuter options for students who want to continue working while pursuing the MIT master’s in engineering and management. Both options offer a 24-month program that combines a comprehensive, career- and family-compatible graduate program with the benefits of being on campus at MIT or attending classes with their peers via live, synchronous video. The flex programs maintain the integrity, high academic standards, and rigorous individual engagement of MIT's traditional in-residence programs.

Many SDM students who work while attending the program report that they can immediately apply material learned in class to the challenges facing their organizations.

SDM students who enroll in the commuter or at-a-distance options, like their on-campus counterparts, must attend the following:

  • SDM’s January session, a full month on campus required of all incoming SDM students
  • Three to six one-week seminars held on campus around the middle of each term

In addition, those attending at a distance must complete one semester in residence at MIT (an Institute requirement). This residency requirement is waived for local commuter students, because they are required to attend live classes on the MIT campus.
