SDM Alumni Update July 2014

SDM 2015

Our first ever Fall start is almost upon us. On August 18th, over 100 new students (about 65 SDM and 40 certificate) will be here to start SDM15, marking a milestone for the program. A number of new events and processes will begin with this, SDM's 19th year as a program. Firsts for SDM15:

  • First Fall start
  • First combined SDM/Certificate 'boot camp'
  • Most women in the starting cohort (40%)
  • New curriculum, including integrated core
  • New specialization track (PDM)- starting Fall of 2015
  • New logo and web site (coming next month)

Welcome to Matt Kressy, who joins as Program Director, Product Design and Management Track. Matt and I will lead the two tracks of SDM and build some additional core expertise in product design. SDM's original track focuses on managing complexity in the large, while PDM will address the unique challenges of new product development, including industrial design, prototyping, sourcing and new product launch. Matt has been teaching at MIT for over 10 years in both Steve Eppinger's Product Design course at Sloan and in SDM's PDD course in Engineering. He brings deep experience in design, understanding customer needs and getting products from ideas to successful market introduction. Matt has his own product design firm ( and teaches at Rhode Island School of Design. Over the coming year, Matt will be developing the PDM core curriculum and arranging for/developing a design studio where PDM can have a home base.

Next month, we'll profile the SDM15 cohort. It's an exciting time to be part of the SDM family!

Stay connected!
